Four Steps to Building a Faith-Based Business

Thinking of growing your faith-based passion work into a profitable online endeavor? It’s helpful to establish a big picture in which God is your top priority. Consider these four building blocks of a successful Christian business.

Pray. Is your business idea a calling from God? Spend time in prayer, asking God to affirm your steps. Pray that He will open the doors you need opened and close the doors you shouldn’t walk through, so that your business is HIS business first and foremost. Trust Him to lead your efforts, and then praise Him each step of the way.

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” (Phillippians 2:13, NLT)

Plan. It’s important to execute good stewardship of the time and talents God gives us. While God ultimately determines our results (Proverbs 16:9), He invites us into the process and rewards us for using our resources wisely. That means spending time planning, preparing, and allowing God’s vision to become our own.

“Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.” (Proverbs 21:5, NLT)

Pursue. Don’t be afraid to move ahead in faith! Pursuing entrepreneurial work is a daily exercise of hard work and trust. There will be hard days when you want to quit; don’t. Look to those obstacles and discouragements as opportunities to learn, improve, and move forward wiser than you were yesterday.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23–24, NIV)

Profit. Eventually your hard work will result in blessing if you put God first. Remember there is no magic formula to earning profits from your business; God doesn’t owe you financial rewards. But He does promise to prosper you, in whatever way is best for your life. So just as you trust Him with the process, trust Him with the outcome. And receive it gladly, giving all glory to God!

“Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.” (Psalm 128:1–2, NIV)
